KS4 students follow the CCEA Specification in Business Studies.
Unit 1 – Starting a business. In this unit students study how a business is created and the importance of the role of the entrepreneur.
Unit 1 will be a written examination of 1 hour 30 minutes.
This examination is worth 40% of the overall GCSE qualification.
This examination will be taken at the end of Year 11.
Unit 2 – Business Development. This unit covers the following three themes:
- Human Resources
- Business Growth
The written examination for Unit 2 will be of 1 hour 30 minutes.
This examination paper is worth 40% of the overall GCSE qualification.
Unit 3 - Controlled Assessment – Students will complete one task which is worth 20% of the overall GCSE qualification.
Year 13 students will be entered for BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma in Business.
This course gives students an excellent grounding in the vocational skills and knowledge required for all types of work in the business environment.
There are 6 units of work – 3 in Year 13 and 3 in Year 14.

1 The Business Environment
2 Business Resources
3 Introduction to Marketing
All units are internally assessed in this specification. Evidence for assessment may be generated through a range of diverse activities including assignment and project work, case studies, role play and oral presentation.
Each unit is awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade and then points are allocated to each grade.
Points are then totalled at the end of Year 14 to determine the overall grade for this qualification.
Distinction*, Distinction. Merit and Pass grades are awarded at the end of Year 14.
Business Studies is a valuable subject. It develops the skills necessary to succeed at university. Studying Business Studies opens the way to many degree and career opportunities including Accountancy, Law, Interactive Multimedia Design, Communications, Advertising and Marketing, Property Investment, Teaching, Business Management and many more. Business Studies also enables pupils to progress into the world of work with the skills and knowledge needed to run a business.
