Throughout Key Stage 3 there will be speakers from outside agencies to focus on topics taught and career opportunities through Geography.

KS4

There are two tiers of entry for this specification: Foundation and Higher. Students entered for the Foundation Tier are eligible for grades C–G. If students fail to attain a grade G, we report their results as unclassified (U). Higher Tier students are eligible for grades A*–D. We provide an allowed grade E as a ‘safety net’ for Higher Tier students just failing to secure a grade D. This course is divided into six themes. These are outlined in more detail below.

 

Unit 1

Understanding our Natural World

This unit covers the following themes:

  • Theme A: River Environments  (25%)
  • Theme B: Coastal Environments (25%)
  • Theme C: Our changing Weather and Climate (25%)
  • Theme D: The Restless Earth (25%)
External written exam
1 hour 30 minutes
 
The examination includes four multi-part questions, one on each theme.  Students answer all four questions.
 
 
   

Unit 2

Living in Our World

This unit covers the following themes:

  • Theme A: Population & Migration (25%)
  • Theme B: Changing Urban Areas (25%)
  • Theme C: Contrasts in World Development. (25%)
  • Theme C: Managing Our Resources (25%)
External written exam
1 hour 30 minutes
 
The examination includes four multi-part questions, one on each theme.  Students answer all four questions.
 
   

Unit 3

Fieldwork
 
Students base their answers on their knowledge and experience of fieldwork.
 
Students must bring a fieldwork statement and table of data to the examination.

Exam results in St Ciaran’s College Geography Department are consistently above the NI average.

KS5

The Geography GCE specification has a modular structure. Students must study two units at AS level and two units at A2 Level.

AS

AS 1 - Physical Geography

External Written Examination (1 hour 15 mins)

Section A

  • Students answer three short structured questions, one on each theme.

Section B 

  • There are three questions requiring extended writing, one on each theme. Students answer any two questions.

 

AS 2 - Human Geography

External Written Examination (1 hour 15 mins)

Section A

  • Students answer three short structured questions, one on each theme.

Section B 

  • There are three questions requiring extended writing, one on each theme. Students answer any two questions.

 

AS 3 - FieldWork Skills & Techniques

External Written Examination (1 hour)

Students must bring a table of data and summary statement to the examination covering the aims and context for their fieldwork.

 

There are two compulsory, structured questions.

Question 1

Students may be required to present, analyse, interpret and evaluate their fieldwork data and the techniques they used to collect it.

 

Question 2

Students repsod to quantitative  and qualitative data from secondary sources.

 

 

   

A2

A2 1 - Physical Processes, Landforms & Management

External Written Examination (1 hour 30 mins)

 

The paper has four parts.  Each part corresponds to one of the four options and includes two structured questions.

Students answer two questions, one from each fo their two chosen options.

 

AS 2 - Processes & Issues in Human Geography 

External Written Examination (1 hour 30 mins)

The paper has four parts.  Each part corresponds to one of the four options and includes two structured questions.

Students answer two questions, one from each fo their two chosen options.

 

AS 3 - Decision Making in Geography

External Written Examination (1 hour 30 mins)

This is a compulsory decision making exercise in the form of a case study.
