The whole school gathered this morning in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ballygawley, for our annual school mass to open the 2018/19 Academic Year. Speaking at the beginning of the mass Grainne McKenna, Head Girl, spoke of the theme of the mass which comes from Pope Francis' new apostolic exhortation (which is a letter to us) called“Gaudete et Exsultate”. When translated this means “Rejoice and Be Glad.” These words are taken from the famous sermon on the Mount in the Gospel of Matthew (5:12). It is a call to be Holy. Holiness is for all of us – just not a select few. It is a way of becoming who we really are.

Grainne told the assembled school community that "our striving for holiness must be grounded in prayer. Holiness can be found through our relationship with God and one another. With the help of Gods mercy and grace our lives can be transformed.  Thus, the joyful holiness of the Gospel is revealed to the world in the everyday lives of ordinary people."

Mass was celebrated by Fr McEvoy and music was provided by the school choir and instrumentalists from the Traditional Ensemble.

Before mass ended a reflection based on the words of Archbishop Tutu was presented by Year 14 students.

Reasons why Christians are joyful

GOODNESS… is stronger than evil

LOVE… is stronger than hate

LIGHT… is stronger than darkness

LIFE…is stronger than death

Victory is ours through HIM who loved us.

-Archbishop Desmond Tutu
